300,000 People Watch, January 20, 1973

The inaugural parade, a tradition since George Washington took office, marches down Pennsylvania Avenue today with 11,634 performers depicting American life from the landing at Plymouth Rock to the landing on the moon.

The parade features 35 floats, 14 equestrian units and 55 bands, including the largest marching band in United States history--1,976 Fairfax County students.

"Spirit of "76," the parade theme, symbolizes not only the country's past, but the future, looking ahead to 1976 when the nation celebrates its 200th birthday.

Complemented by banners, color guard and rifle carriers is the New York Knickerbocker Drum and Bugle Corps.

(74) The U.S. Park Police Horse Mounted Unit is a familiar sight in inaugural parades. In the past three decades, the unit has participated in a number of inaugurals, including those of President Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson.

(75) On April 30, 1780, George Washington appeared on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City to take the oath of office. New York's entry in the 1973 parade celebrates the first Inaugural.

City Band Set To Drum Up Nixon's Day by Bryant Mason

When the New York Knickerbockers Drum and Bugle Corps performs at the presidential Inauguration in Washington Saturday, it will be the first such performance by a city band since the old police band played at Teddy Roosevelt's swearing in , in 1898. " We have had a number of honor's" says Harvey Berish, the band's 33-year-old general manager. Of course this is doubly unusual in that this is the first time since the turn of the century that a New York City band has been invited to play." The official band of the New York Yankees, the Knickerbockers unit is made up of 200 members who practice in a renovated, second-floor bowling alley at 2415, Westchester Ave. , near Zarega Ave. in the Bronx.

Knickerbocker band to play for Nixon

The New York Knickerbocker Drum and Bugle Corps, familiar to thousands of Yonkers parade-goers, has been chosen as New York's official musical unit at the Presidential Inaugural Parade Jan. 20, 1973, in Washington, D.C.

And a Yonkers appearance helped them on their way.

Harvey Berish, the band's general manager, says the Knickerbockers caught President Richard Nixon's eye in Getty Square during his motorcade through Westchester County on Veterans Day.

Then the band applied to the state inaugural committee, and recently received word of its official designation. But Berish feels the band was" selected by the President.'

The Knickerbockers, who are based in the Bronx, have appeared in Yonkers parades for a number of years and won a trophy as "The Best All Around Musical Unit" in the Centennial and Columbus Day Parade in October.

KNICKS OFFICIAL YANKEE BASEBALL TEAM

The New York Knickerbocker Drum & Bugle Corps, here participating in a ceremony at Yankee Stadium, with Yanks Elston Howard and Bernie Allen, have returned from third international championship and goodwill tour.

The Knickerbocker Drum and Bugle Corps of the Bronx entertained before the game and it was a shame only 5827 were in attendance. They were good enough to be there on that day the Yankee draw 70,000 again.

Yankees Name Knickerbocker Official Corps.
The New York Knickerbockers drum and bugle corps has been designated as the official one of the New York Yankees baseball team, announces Frederick J. Bachman, special projects director for the Yanks. The Knicks were to appear in the Stadium yesterday, to be presented with the New York Yankee flag.

The designation came as a result of an agreement between Michael Burke, president of the baseball organization , and Harvey Berish, general manager of the 110-members marching band and pageantry team. Then Knickerbockers also are " ambassadors of good will" for New York City.

The corps is one of two junior musical marching units housed in quarters at 2415 Westchester Ave., and is open to membership for youngsters aged 9 to 21.

The New York City crew is designed to entertain. In a building year, as obvious with many new and young faces, the Knicks will be sure winners in the future.

Profile of a Champion, Editorial , Dominic Livoti

Anyone who has attended the Major Individual and Quartet Championship Shows this winter in the Metropolitan New York area, has walked away with great admiration for a quite young man representing the N.Y. Knickerbockers.

It is difficult indeed to bring honor to your unit as a single individual, usually it is the group effort that brings recognition, but Dominic Livoti, now called "Dr. Dom" has succeeded in winning all types of plaudits for his superiority in the musical world and his personality, which is a reflection on his unit.

Dom has been a member of the Knicks since they were the Midshipmen. Rising steadily until his appointment last year to the solo position during the Knicks remarkable color presentation. He is a member of the corps Jr. Staff, and Dominic is the instructor of the Knickerbocker Cadet parade and training unit. A college man, Dominic is just one of the many fine young people in Drum Corps that merit attention and special notice.

Recently Dominic won Individual Soprano Solo medals at St. Andrews Bridgemen N.E. Championship, Bayonne, New Jersey, St. Rita's Brassmen show Brooklyn, New York and Hurricanes National Open at Bridgeport, Conn.

Acknowledgments

''Music in the Air" originated 2 years ago at Memorial Stadium, in Mount Vernon. The contest is now recognized as one of the finest presented in the area during the ''Drum Corps Season''. We are sincerely happy to bring the contest to the public again this year, (1964). This could not have been accomplished without the help of many people. Unfortunately space does not permit us to name them all, but we would like to acknowledge the continued help of the following: Commissioner Branca and the Mount Vernon Department of Recreation for their generosity and understanding. The Mount Vernon Police Department and the Auxiliary Police for the efficient job of handling the field protection and traffic problem, and of course the many thousands of wonderful people who continue to patronize our show. We thank you sincerely for without you there would be no contests. We hope you enjoy our show this evening and will be back again next year.

Drum corps competing this evening are : The Hot-Shots. (Norwalk, Conn.). The Scarlet Lancers. (Jamaica, N.Y.). The Saxon Knights. (Centereach, N.Y.). The Eastsiders. ( New York City, N.Y.). The Oceanside Legionnaires. ( Oceanside, N.Y.) and The Vanguards. ( Farmingdale, N.Y.)
